GUNJUR ALKALO INAUGURATED

The newly appointed Alkalo of Gunjur Village was recently inaugurated in a ceremony attended by the Governor of Western region, Mr. Lamin Sanneh, and Secretary of State for Youth, Religious Affairs, Local Government and Lands, Ismaila Sambou.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Governor warned that he would not tolerate anybody or group of people to undermine peace in his region. The ceremony attracted thousands of people from Gunjur and the satellite villages.
In his remarks the Secretary of State for Youth, Religious Affairs, Local Government and Lands, Ismaila Sambou, called on the people of Gunjur to throw their weight behind the new Alkalo for the development of the village.
It could be recalled that the former Alkalo, Sabaki Touray was made to call time on his tenure on health grounds and the dissatisfaction of the villagers with his administration.

[Dave adds: An Alkalo is an elected village chief, equivalent to a village mayor in countries like France or Spain. In Spanish, mayors are called Alcalde so perhaps both derive from Arabic Al-Qadi?]
